6000 Minutes Wrap-Up

This post is the final one in a series about my 2020 100 Day Project called 6000 Minutes.  In a nutshell, I spent 60 minutes each Monday thru Friday for 100 Days working on projects and sharing the results.  I began on January 20, 2020 and finished on June 5, 2020.  You can read more about my thoughts and how I came up with this project on the original post here.

I worked on 34 projects that averaged 3 days each, but varied between one and nine days long.  Some were actually finished “off” 6000 Minutes time.  If I came to the end of the 60 minutes and only had a little more work to do, I often just went ahead and finished a section or completed the project.  All in all, I spent just over 130 hours on this project including the administrative, logistical and marketing work.

My main goal was to focus more on process than product.  In my three previous projects I made one work a day.  So did the project accomplish my goals?  In some ways yes and in some ways no.  I did seven projects that took five days or more, while the rest were much shorter.  I definitely felt less time pressure than in other years so that is a definite win.  And while I did some projects that took longer, I sometimes felt during these projects that my audience might be getting bored.  Now, of course, I don’t make art just for an audience.  But, when you do a very public challenge like this, people like to tune in to see what is new.  Honestly, quilting a quilt for several days is not a very exciting thing to watch 🙂  However the shorter projects, especially toward the end of the challenge, sometimes felt like I was making stuff to make stuff because I said I would make stuff.  Sometimes that stuff turns out much better than you thought, but sometimes it feels like time could have been better spent elsewhere.  It is true that this is all part of the process, but it is important to me to make the best use of my time.  My guess is that I need more of a plan – but not a rigid plan that is decided on Day 1 of 100.

As much as I have enjoyed the four 100 Day Projects I’ve done (and think doing five would be a nice round number), I’m not sure if I’ll do it again next year or not.  It is hard for me to resist a challenge!  Perhaps I will develop the ideas behind the project further and make it even more my own.  At this point, I am not trying to make up my mind yet.  I’ll start thinking about it more seriously toward the end of the year.  Stay tuned!
