Charity Challenge – June 2015

I’m excited to get started on my first Charity Challenge quilt!  I’m committed to using my stash to do this and that usually means a scrappy quilt.  The biggest pieces in my stash are 1/2 yard and most are around a quarter yard, so scrappy it is!

Now, if you’ve followed me for any length of time, you probably know that most of my quilts aren’t scrappy.  They tend to use a limited number of fabrics, so this is a double challenge for me 🙂

To make scrappy MY kind of scrappy, I’m going to limit the color palette by choosing three colors.

I call this quilt Triple Treat.  It is super simple to sew and would work great as a leader and ender project. (My main project right now is an applique quilt, so that won’t work for me, but maybe for you!).  I chose blue and green because that’s what I have the most of in my stash and they are gender neutral colors.  Here’s the rest of my plan:

Triple Treat
Finished quilt:  36″ x 48″

Blue:  216 2 1/2″ squares (14 WOF* strips)
White:  64 2 1/2″ squares (4 WOF strips)
Green:  152 2 1/2″ squares (10 WOF strips)
Binding: (not shown) 5 2 1/2″ WOF strips
Batting:  42″ x 54″
Backing:  1 3/4 yds

Sew the blue squares into blue 4-patches and the green squares into green 4-patches.  You’ll need 54 blue 4-patches and 38 green 4-patches.

Sew the white squares into 2 long strips of 14 squares and 2 long strips of 18 squares.

Sew the blue 4-patches into 9 rows of 6 4-patches.

Sew the 18 square strips of white to the sides of the blue center.  Sew the 14 square strips of white to the top and bottom of the blue center.

Sew the green 4-patches into 2 strips of 9 4-patches and 2 strips of 10 4-patches.  Sew the 10 4-patch strips to the sides of the quilt top and the 9 4-patch strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top.

Layer with the backing and batting and quilt as desired.

Bind with the 2 1/2″ strips.
(*WOF = width of fabric)

This quilt will go to the one of the A2MQG chosen charities, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan here in Ann Arbor.

I’ve got a lot of cutting to do in the next few days!  What are you making this month?
