11 Jun A Dashing new quilt pattern

Dashing – Option A |
Last year, I was thinking about new patterns and I wanted to make a plus quilt. I love the simple plus shape! But, my brain had to go and point out to me that I already have a plus pattern (Think Positive) and I also designed a plus quilt (Urban Oasis) for Fat Quarterly issue 13. Time to think of something else. So I made the giant leap from a plus to a minus. But, a minus quilt sounds kind of, well, negative… Jumping from math to English, I decided on dashes!

Dashing – Option B |
Lots of twisting and turning later, Dashing was born! Working with just a simple little line was so much fun. As I was playing with variations of the block, I couldn’t make up my mind which version I liked better, so the pattern includes both. The grey version (Option A) without sashing has a contrast dash that makes a fantastic secondary diamond design across the quilt – I love it when that happens! The aqua version is two colors, except for a tiny dab of yellow in the lower right corner that I couldn’t resist. This version (Option B) has sashing in between the blocks and I like the way they look kind of like a ball of string. This option would be fun to do using different colors for each block.

Both these quilts were quilted by the amazing Kathy Koch of ThreadBear Quilting. They are the first quilts I’ve ever had quilted by someone else! As I’d seen plenty of great examples of Kathy’s work, I wasn’t nearly as nervous as I might have been š
I hope you love Dashing as much as I do! When you make your version, send me a picture and I’ll share it on social media or share it yourself and tag me @eschhousequilts and #dashingquilt. Isn’t it fun to see all the ways one pattern can be made?!
PS Fabrics in the grey quilt are Lotta Jansdotter’s Blomster for the background and Alison Glass’ Bike Path and Sunprint for the dashes. The aqua quilt is RJR Cotton Supreme Solids in Turks and Caicos and Optical White. All purchased from Pink Castle Fabrics.

Posted at 12:27h, 11 JuneI really like this design! It would lend itself easily to smaller projects as well – I can see placemats and a confetti-like wall hanging in my future!
