QuiltCon WIP

QuiltCon was such a fantastic experience!  Today, I’m linking up with Lee’s WIP Wednesday to tell you a little about the class I took with Jacquie Gering.  The class was called Building Bridges based on the techniques Jacquie used to create her awesome Bridges quilt.

We were asked to bring inspiration photos to class and I chose this one.  I took this photo in June of 2010 when my older daughter and I went on our East Coast College Tour 🙂  This building is at Columbia University in New York City.  I love the mix of diagonal and horizontal shapes and lines all set within a grid.

Here is the work I did during the workshop:

It, uh, needs some work…  It seemed too symmetrical, so I added the strips of cream solid to break it up a bit. However, that broke up one of the diagonals that I really like from the inspiration picture.  I’m probably being too literal in my interpretation of the photo.  I should follow Jacquie’s lead and cut it in pieces and put it back together again and see how that turns out.

It was such fun to spend a day learning the techniques Jacquie uses and seeing all the wonderful work of the others in the class.  I’m such a huge fan of the work she creates.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank Jacquie, Alissa, Heather (@moderndayquilts) and the rest of the MQG group for the amazing quality and quantity of work they did to make QuiltCon happen!  It was a huge undertaking and they all worked harder and longer than I could have.  The results were totally worth it!  QuiltCon was a huge success according to everyone I talked with and we all can’t wait for the next one.

The Modern Quilt Guild has some cool things planned in the future and a new website, so sign up for their newsletter and check the website to keep up to date on what is going on.  I’ll be back soon to tell you a little about the classes I taught at QuiltCon.

Now, go check out what everyone else is working on!

I woke up thinking I should get my project out from the class today and work on it more and here you are doing that too. I love the colours you are using and the photo. And I agree, the class was so fun, as was QuiltCon.

I'm so jealous you got to go to QuiltCon. I was even in Austin at the beginning of the week, but it just didn't work out. Besides, I really wanted to take a class from Angela Walters, but she filled up fast. I have to say I'm impressed with your Columbia University NYC piece. Love the color contrast.
    Your next door neighbor,
    Linda

The bridges are AMAZING. I love the idea and I can not wait to see how your version comes together. I am now going to go and get some more information on these patterns. Thanks for sharing.
