12 Apr Minimal Mini Series – MM3

There is something about the movement of putting things on an angle that is very satisfying.  In MM3, I played with simple lines spaced evenly apart on a 45 degree angle.  The fabrics are Robert Kaufman Kona cotton solids in Bone and White.

I constructed this mini so the lines were vertical: cutting the white sections to length and then adding the bone sections in between and to the ends of each white piece.  Then I turned the whole thing 45 degrees and trimmed it to 20 1/2″ square.

The angled quilting reinforces the piecing.  I used white thread to quilt the white sections, including the ends where the color changes to bone, and bone colored thread for the all bone sections.  Specifically, I used Aurifil 2024 and 2310.

I don’t remember if I was inspired by rain when I first sketched this design, but that’s what it makes me think of now – we have had a lot of rain in Michigan lately!

In addition to exploring the idea of minimal quilts in this series, I may also learn a lot about photography.  My photographic skills have never been my strong suit, but these pale, small quilts are much harder to capture than I would have guessed.  Too much light bleaches them out very easily and even indirect light from a nearby window lights them unevenly.  I’ll keep trying to find a good spot in my house to photograph them!
