Good Neighbors!

Do you know Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts?  If not, you should!  She makes the most beautiful, charming and cheerful projects from scraps and is also the host of the ever-popular Finish It Up Friday linky party on her blog.

And now, she’s added fabric designer to her resume!  Amanda Jean‘s new fabric line is called Good Neighbors and is exclusive to Connecting Threads.  To celebrate the release of her fabric (available September 8), Amanda Jean and Connecting Threads are hosting a pincushion party!  Check out the rest of the lineup below.
I’ve only ever made one pincushion before and that was a LONG time ago, so I was eager to jump in.  (As a side note, the pincushion I use every day is one of those tomato/ strawberry ones that I’ve had FOR-EVER.  The filling is starting to spill out of it, so it was time!).  With so many fun colors and prints, it was hard to decide what my pincushion top should look like.  I’m always a fan of an orange peel/leaf design, two colors and a bit of hand applique so off I went in that direction.
After asking advice on Instagram and Facebook about lining the pincushion or not, I ended up adding a layer of fusible fleece to both the top and bottom of the pincushion.  I meant to quilt the top before I put the whole thing together, but in my excitement to finish the project, I forgot!  I filled the whole thing with crushed walnut shells, hand stitched it closed and added some pins.
I read somewhere years ago that because metal pins and needles were quite expensive way back when, sewists sometimes made designs with their pins in their pincushions so they could tell if any were missing.  I thought that was a fun idea and have done it ever since.
Would you like a chance to play with a charm pack of Good Neighbors?  Of course you would and I have a charm pack to give away!  (Sorry, but the giveaway is limited to US and Canadian residents).  Just tell me if you’ve ever made a pincushion. What shape was it?  How big? (Mine finishes at 4″ square)  What did you fill it with?  I’ll pick a random winner at the end of the day on Thurs, Sept 10.  Don’t forget to leave your email address in your comment – you can’t win if I can’t reach you!

This is a really cute pin cushion! I remember making a pin cushion in 4-H. Last fall, during our local quilt hop I bought a charm square size kit. It is about 5 X 5" and not quite 1 1/2" thick and filled with crushed walnut shells. Would love to play with this charm pack. Magpienmom@aol.com

My all time favorite pincushion is the little chicken! I love to make crazy color combos for the beaks, combs and tails. I always use a combo of polyfil and walnut shells-the polyfil to shape corners and seal the opening before I hand stitch closed.

I've made a 6 inch square pincushion with a large button in the center and filled it with crushed walnut shells. I love the weight of it as it stays put on the table and I'm not constantly picking it up off the floor like those I have that are filled with polyester fill. debbie-landry@hotmail.com

Adorable pincushion! I've made a few pincushions over the years, but my favorite is a cushion attached to the top of a wide mouth half pint canning jar. I make a muslin pillow (the appropriate size) filled with crushed walnut shells then cover the pillow with a fun fabric an attach to the jar seal and ring. I like to put little treats in the jar and give them as gifts to my quilting sisters.

I made one like this and love it! I used a half pint (that even sounds larger than it looks), straight sided jar and keep my pins in it. I made a second one and keep my needle packets, beeswax, thimble, and small folding scissors (Dritz) in it so I can pick it up and go to wherever I'm working.

I've made pincushions, but have given them all away!!
(I keep my pins loose, in a little box, or in a little bowl… I really need to make one just for me!)
The kind I usually like to make as a gift is stuffed with scraps of batting and poly fill, and then attached to the top of a half-pint glass jar. The jar weights the pincushion, and can hold little things like buttons or bobbins (or an emergency stash of chocolate!!)
I love your little orange peel/leaf pincushion!!

I've made a few pin cushions, my favorite pattern is sewing 7 3 inch hexies into a flower, then folding the petals back and seing another hexie in the center. I usually just stuff really tight with fiber fill. Thanks for the chance to win!

I've made several pin cushions over the years. I made a darling peppermint candy one for a Holly Jolly Days event at my LQS. Jaybirds pincushion pattern Biscuit made with peppermint candy fabric and white silver glitter dividers, came out sooo pretty! Peppermints are my best friends favorite so I gifted the pin cushion to her after the show was over.

I was required to have a wrist pin cushion for 8th grade Home Ec sewing class. The solution, of course, was to make one myself. I didn't know how to use a sewing machine yet, so I hand stitched together two rectangles of scrap fabric, stuffed it with cotton, and tacked on some elastic to go around my wrist. It was too big for me, but I still have it somewhere.

I've made pincushions in the shape of a cake slice. They were super cute. I used crushed walnut shells purchased at the pet store. I like the weight but I felt like they made my pins less sharp…maybe the humidity here? So now I put the shells at the bottoms and stuff with poly fiberfill. Maybe I will try the walnut shell/rice mix. Thanks!

Made a pin cushion in college-pre internet days and stuffed it with plastic grocey and bread bags. What an epic failure! latest one is oblong 3"x6" stuffed with walnut shells and I love it. Wool tweed cover and it is heavy so it always stays upright and lands right side up if shoved off the machine.

Need to make some for my sisters now so thanks for all the ideas. Your petals one would help organize the differnt pins and many needles that I keep in my large pin cushion. dian at gdavidhoffman@yahoo.com

I have made lots of pincushions: snow owl brides, owls, frog, dress forms, santa owl, Dr Seuss square, turkeys. I have used cotton fabric, felt, brocade, buttons, cotton pearl thread. Who doesn't love pincushions. I have participated in several pc swaps.

I use fiber stuffing and fill the base of the pincushion with white rice to weight it and keep it steady. Not too many people or allergic to rice versus using walnut shells.

BTW I love Amanda Jean's website and I recently purchased her book Sunday Morning Quilts.

Debbie, it's wonderful to meet your. Cool history/trivia about the pricey pins and accounting for them. I'll throw that out at my next sew-in/quilt -in. Yes I've made a pin cushion…log shaped, about 8"long, stuffed w/bird Gravel N' Grit. It is a digestive aid, also sharpens a bird's beak, so stuck pins get sharpened too.
Love your blues/greens in your Good Neighbors pin cushion.

I have dozens of patterns to make pincushions, but so far the only ones I've made have used the Tiny Worlds pattern by Mimi Kirschner. They are made in vintage cups and saucers and have a little house (or whatever one wishes) on a "hill" with some trees or bushes or flowers, all made of wool felt. I always fill my pincushions with wool roving or batting or leftover snippets of wool felt. They turned out pretty cute!

I have made a couple and I followed Camille Roskelley's instructions from her Craftsy class. They were square, patchwork design, filled with walnut shells and straight line quilting. They probably finished at around 31/2 inches. I enjoyed making them and would love to make one like yours, the orange peel is waay cute:) prismsaz@cox.net

I make pincushions of different sizes from leftover fabrics of other projects. Or I take an orphan block and make it into a pincushion. I have yet to make more than one pincushion the same way. I usually use a walnut shell and rice mixture in my cushions.

    Love your pin cushion!!

Yes! I make random-sized pincushions frequently. Mostly from leftover projects because I liked the fabric and color combos, or because Iike I learned from Ananda Jean, even tiny scraps can be put to use.

I use rice and dried lavender in my pincushions. Call me crazy, but this way, they double as little hand warmers! I ALWAYS use 100% cotton batting for the quilted ones.

    Thanks for the giveaway chance!
