Sew Solid Sunday #2!

Mode Mondrian – about 42″ x 44″

Welcome to Sew Solid Sunday #2!  I’m really excited to share my solid quilt, Mode Mondrian, with you today!  Way back in 2008 when I first sketched this quilt, I had in mind to make it using solids, but I fell in love with my first line of fabric and ended up creating the quilt that became my Urban Trail pattern.

Urban Trail

Fast forward nearly six (!) years and I downsized the pattern, rearranged the color placement, chose some great solids and Mode Mondrian was finally a reality.  I used Robert Kaufman Kona solids in White, Black, Canary, Ocean and Rich Red – all out of my stash (a nice bonus).

I quilted this quilt pretty densely – the lines are about 1/2″ apart and I used a slightly different quilting design for each color.  The red and yellow blocks are quilted on different diagonals, the white and blue sections (except the long, skinny white section on the left) are quilted with horizontal and vertical lines respectively and the black sections are quilted in a square spiral.

I decided against a skinny black binding as not suiting the scale of the quilt, but a wider binding didn’t feel right either, so I decided to use a facing.  I wrote a tutorial on how I face a quilt in my previous post if you’d like to give this technique a try.

I love solids and find it hard to work with prints. My son(looking over my shoulder) loves your Mondrian quilt. He'll have to wait until I finish his first one though!

Debbie, I *love* the Mondrian quilt! His work translates so well to quilting, and I think you pulled it off brilliantly! I've been more and more drawn to working with solids, lately–great idea for a link-up!

I think this will be a great series Debbie. Don't know how often I'll have a solid quilt to fit the link but will definitely enjoy seeing what others are doing. So far there are some great quilts linked up. Your Mondrian is beautiful and very spot on the his work.

I love the Mondrian quilt, one day I want to explore his work. What are the rules for your link, are you looking for projects made this week only? I will be working with solids again later today but not likely to have a new finish so are you looking for finishes only?
