Remembering…

Last Friday, along with Brenda, Dorie and Ginia, I attended the American Quilter’s Society show in Grand Rapids.  I hadn’t realized that one of the special exhibits featured the quilts of Pat Campbell, who died earlier this year.

The first appliqué class I ever took was from Pat Campbell in 2004.  I believe that Texas was her adopted home state, but she was feisty and fun and it seemed to fit her to a “T”.  Pat had so much to teach us that day, I don’t believe I sewed more than one leaf, but I knew I loved it.  I still use the needles she recommended and the wonderful roll full of YLI silk thread I splurged on.  I remember thinking my husband would be shocked if he knew how much it cost me.  I got over it pretty quickly 🙂

At the time, I hoped to be good enough at appliqué one day to make Pat’s Elizabethan Woods pattern.  My taste has changed a lot since then, but I still admire this quilt.  It was wonderful to see, in real life, so many of her beautiful quilts.  Thanks for the inspiration, Pat!

Debbie: thanks so much for your moving tribute. Pat Campbell has been one of my "Quilting Heros" for many years. I am true admirer of her work. She set the bar for me and I adore applique to this day because of her books and patterns. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I truly feel her loss.
