03 Mar Sedimentary
Life has really gotten in the way of my sewing time this week! Nothing unusual good or bad, just lots of it 🙂
Sedimentary is one of my submissions to the Modern Quilt Guild Exhibit that will be in Houston this fall. This quilt started with the idea of making a quilt from strips with the second strip in each row being a contrasting color. After I sketched out the idea, it reminded me of learning about sedimentary rocks at school. I always loved the rock units.
When it came to choosing fabrics, I couldn’t resist the contrast of the vivid oranges and the soothing greys. I quilted Sedimentary with simple horizontal lines to reinforce the piecing idea. I used grey thread in the grey sections and orange thread in the orange section. Since I didn’t need to do any marking, it went very quickly 🙂 It came out to be my favorite throw size – about 54″ x 72″.
Decisions about which quilts are accepted are supposed to be announced by the end of March. Wish me luck! Did you enter anything?

This is stunning! Do you just use cotton fabric? I’m new to sewing so wonder if you need special fabric to do this?

Love this type of quilt, when I look at it I see it on a wall like an extract painting. But I would like it smaller. Wonder if I could buy the pattern and maybe hints on how to make a smaller wall size? I am New at making quilts and appreciate your input…

I love this quilt but, alas, I’m not a quilter. Instead, I bought your pattern PDF & I’m going to use it to create a cross stitch project based on the lower ~1/3 in the orange/gray combination.

I've come from the Selvage blog, where this quilt is featured today. Love it!

I was inspired by your quilt. I made a version for my son that is over sized queen 120 x 95 in greys and blue! I have posted a link! Hope you like it. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love this quilt, Debbie. I love the variety of fabrics and the contrasts of color. For something sedimentary, it is very dynamic! It deserves a spot in Houston.

I quite like this! I also loved the rocks sections in school. That pop of orange is great.

LOVE this! I've had a similarly inspired sketch in my books for a few years, but you nearly made my vision too.
