13 Dec SMS Giveaway Week!
It’s a very lucky thing for me that Sew, Mama, Sew decided to expand their Giveaway Day to a Week. I have been dealing with the worst cold I’ve had in years and that put me way behind on finishing up my giveaway quilt.
Welcome to those of you who are new here! My name is Debbie and this is where I share my sewing adventures and a little of the rest of my life too.
Some of my regular readers may recognize the pattern I used to make this quilt. It is my Triangle Maze pattern, which was originally a free pattern here on the blog. I have updated the pattern and added five more sizes – yes five! The free pattern was for a crib sized quilt and now I have added the baby size (shown) and throw, twin, full, and queen/king sizes. You can find the pattern in my Etsy shop or at PatternSpot.
This is the fourth or fifth quilt I’ve made from this pattern and every time I get more ideas for color combinations to try. Right now, I’d love to make this baby quilt again with lots of pretty pink prints. I’m not sure if I’d use only pink or whether I might add in a little grey too.
Anyway, giveaway details:
I’m giving away this baby quilt which measures approximately 36″ x 45″. I used Kona Ash, Bright Peri and Bahama Blue and an orange solid from my stash that is similar to Kona School Bus or Orange. It has been washed and is full of crinkly goodness. The vertical quilting lines are quilted with grey thread and the horizontal quilting lines are in aqua thread. The back is the same orange used on the front.
To enter, leave me a comment telling me what color thread you like to use for quilting. Do you always use white, another color, variegated thread, matching or contrasting? If you are a follower or become one, leave me a second comment letting me know and you’ll be entered a second time. (You can follow me on FaceBook too – button in left column) I am happy to ship internationally. The giveaway will close at the end of the day on December 16 US EST. Please be sure to leave me a way to contact you if you are a “no-reply blogger”.
Don’t forget to check out all six categories of giveaways back at Sew, Mama, Sew!

Posted at 03:47h, 17 DecemberThe closest thing I've done to a quilt is a couple of mug rugs on my machine. I used white because I only have one bobbin and can't change it out. It turned out cute!

Posted at 03:31h, 17 DecemberI prefer to use white thread for quilting but sometimes use different colors depending on the quilt. I've never used a variegated thread.

Posted at 23:22h, 16 DecemberI have honestly never done a quilt because I am scared to mess the fabric up so one of these days when I get brave enough to try my thread will match the fabric as close as possible so you can't see all my mistakes!!

Posted at 22:07h, 16 DecemberOh My Life, this is the best giveaway ever. That quilt is a stunner! I started off using only white thread but now I'm drawn to a very pale grey that seems to blend in with most, and even if it doesn't it's not as obvious as white.

Posted at 22:05h, 16 DecemberIt really depends on the project. Sometimes I use something that blends in, sometimes something that stands out. I really like to use a color that is unexpected! My boys would really love this quilt…if I'm willing to share! Thank you.

Posted at 22:03h, 16 DecemberDarling quilt! What color thread I use depends on the quilt. Sometimes I want it to stand out, sometimes I want it to disappear.

Posted at 19:25h, 16 DecemberLove the quilt and the pattern. I will be considering it for my 11-year old as I am going to make him a twin size in 2012. I think he would love it! I typically use a color that matches the front so you can't see all my mistakes as well! Thanks so much for the chance! Smiles~Beth

Posted at 18:58h, 16 DecemberThanks for the opportunity. My favorite quilting color has to be white…it just goes with everything. Although I have been using quite alot of neutral taupe or gray lately…white is still my fav.

Posted at 18:05h, 16 DecemberI am a hooooorribble machine quilter, so for machine quilting I always use a thread color that will blend with most of the fabrics. If the project is small and I'm hand stitching I use a cute contrast.

Posted at 14:20h, 16 DecemberIt's lovely! I mostly use white although I try to match the dominant color in the quilt – contrast quilting is not my thing, mostly because my quality of quilting is not too high.

Posted at 10:17h, 16 DecemberYou know, up until recently my quilting thread was either black or white. Lately I have switched it up a bit and have used some variegated, poly filament (which I did not like) and coordinating colors. I like the variegated the best. Thanks for the opportunity to win this sweet baby quilt, it will go into the stack that are going to St. John's Hospital Baby Unit which is being rebuilt after the May tornado. Thank you

Posted at 03:50h, 16 DecemberSUCH a generous giveaway! Love this quilt! I mostly use a light gray or (gasp!) light orange which is really a neutral… depends on if I want to quilting to be highlighted, or the pattern of the quilt top to be highlighted…

Posted at 03:08h, 16 DecemberI have only quilted a few little quilts, but I've only used white to quilt with. However, if I were more proficient I might try variegated.

Posted at 02:18h, 16 DecemberI really like your idea of using two different threads for the horizontal and vertical quilting lines. Clever! I usually use a matching thread that is a shade darker than the main color of the quilt. I have also used a contrasting thread too, though. I think it depends on the style of the quilt.

Posted at 17:58h, 15 DecemberSince I'm a newbie, I use the thread that will blend in as much as possible. I'd love to try one project though, with black thread on white fabric and "draw" in the bird legs, outline the bird beaks etc. Just to get over the fear of having my stitches seen 🙂
Sarah
Posted at 17:58h, 15 DecemberI think thread choice for me totally depends on how busy the pattern is, if it is simple, then contrasting or variegated looks great, if the pattern is busy, I like to blend in the thread as much as possible.

Posted at 03:55h, 15 DecemberHello, what a fun, modern looking quilt!
As for quilting thread colors, I choose the color based on what fabrics I used and how busy they are. But unless it is very busy fabric, I like to use a thread that will call out colors in the quilt but not fight them. My recent one, was a mix of reds, yellows and greens and I used a warm apricot as it blended with some and stood out nicely on the reds and greens.
Thank you for the opportunity!

Posted at 15:31h, 14 DecemberI am not that keen a quilter as I am a patchworker lol! I tend to use the same colour or varigated thread to blend in with the quilt top/bottom. That way it hides all my mistakes! I would hoever love to be good enough/brave enough to use a contrasting thread because it is the quilting which makes the quilt!

Posted at 10:27h, 14 DecemberI'm not the most confident quilter around and that might be the reason for me often going for variegated thread. I imagine that wonkiness is less visible if the thread and fabric goes in and out of matching. If you know what i mean. 🙂

Posted at 05:45h, 14 DecemberI haven't made many quilts. For the few I've made, I match the thread to the main color. I never thought about doing a different color, but since I quilt them on my home machine with straight (sort of) lines, I probably don't want to highlight the thread. I'm intrigued now though. What about a mostly solid with a wildly different thread?

I usually try to do something contrasting, but matching — if that makes sense. I used a fuchsia thread on my last quilt, which was a coin stack quilt. The bulk of the quilt was white but the coins were various colors: Pinks, greens, yellows and oranges. The fuchsia matched the coins but was a nice contrast against the white.

Posted at 19:30h, 13 DecemberI used to always get worked up about what color to use for quilting… what if the color looks good on the front, but not the back? Then finally this weekend I had an epiphany; why not use a different color for the bobbin? Haha, I know it's nothing original, but I was glad to have thought of it!

I prefer neutral thread for quilting, but I'm up for contrasting thread if it seems to suit the mood of the piece.

Posted at 18:54h, 13 DecemberThis quilt is so beautiful! For quilting, I almost always match my thread to the most predominant color in the quilt. I find that it really helps to hide little imperfections and make the overall product look a lot more polished. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

Posted at 18:40h, 13 DecemberI like to use thread that matches the front of the quilt, so sometimes it contrasts with the back of the quilt. Does that makes sense? Love the colors in your quilt.

Posted at 17:29h, 13 DecemberI have never made a quilt, but am hoping to start this coming year. I just got a table runner that was quilted and they used variegated thread and I REALLY liked the look of that a lot. For my normal sewing I use whatever matches my fabric because I don't want the thread to show.

Posted at 17:13h, 13 DecemberLove the quilt, orange is a favorite of mine, and I do like modern quilts.
I have quilted with both neutral and contrasting threads, but have little experience to decide which is best for me yet. I do like the look of the variegated thread I have seen used in some quilts. I would like to try using it.

Posted at 17:11h, 13 DecemberYou're giving away…a quilt…wow, what a generous soul you are! So much work! As for thread, I usually try to match one of the main colors in the quilt, if possible. If it's mult-colored, then I go for a neutral taupe or beige tone.

Posted at 15:42h, 13 DecemberOh my goodness! A chance to win one of Debbie's quilts. How awesome is that?!
I quilt each piece differently. Sometimes the design calls for something that blends in, highlighting what you want to show off. Other times, I want the quilting to stand out, so I will contrast. Sorry, I don't have a single approach for all my pieces, so I can't give you a straight answer.

Posted at 15:28h, 13 DecemberI love this so lively a quilt!!
I have a colorful quilt that has
wedding rings on the front… but when
you turn it over it is white with
a tree of life quilted into it with
green leaves and a brown trunk, it
sounds wild but it is lovely.
I have been stitching the family names
into it.

Posted at 15:23h, 13 DecemberWhat a beautiful quilt! I adore variegated thread, but only use it when I'm quilting a design I know. If I'm trying something new, then I stick to cream or natural.

Posted at 15:10h, 13 DecemberI use a lot of varigated threads, both shiny and flat cottons. Depending on what the quilt calls for I may go contrasting or something that melts in. The baby quilt is adorable.. perfect for my friend's new baby boy!

Posted at 15:03h, 13 DecemberHoly wow – what a gorgeously modern quilt! Love that pattern.
I'm a fan of matching my thread to my sashing, in general. I tend to use a lot of white – I just like how bright and crisp it is. But I did try a zebra variegated from Aurifil on a halloween quilt and it was pretty darn rad, so I'm starting to veer towards variegateds!
